About this project

The goal of the Live Christmas Tree Project is to make it easier for people to choose a potted Christmas tree over a cut tree.

For a donation of $90 we will delivered a live tree to your home by Dec. 21. Your trees will be collected by Dec 31 and donated to the City of Guelph, who will then re-plant them on public parkland within our city.

The money collected will cover the cost of the trees.

A portion of funds raised will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Why choose a live tree?

Potted trees offer many environmental benefits over a cut tree. When a potted tree is planted it continues to grow, cleaning the air, storing carbon and providing habitat for wildlife.

The embodied energy of a cut tree is lost when the tree is disposed of. Usually a cut tree is mulched, releasing its stored carbon over time as the mulch breaks down.

With a live tree the embodied energy is maintained as the tree continues to grow.

One tree can absorb over a ton of carbon dioxide over its life.

Caring for your Live Tree

Here are some tips to ensure your tree is enjoyed for the holidays, and thrives as a beautiful addition to the landscape for years to come.

When you bring your tree inside, set it in a location away from heat sources, such as fireplaces, vents and heaters. Never lift the tree by the stem.

Place the tree onto a tray or pan, to protect your floor from water drainage. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. You may mist the tree with water using a spray bottle, to help it retain moisture (be sure to unplug lights beforehand).
When decorating, use small, low-temperature lights, such as miniature or LED lights.

If possible move the tree to a garage or unheated area a day or two before your scheduled pick-up date to re-acclimatize it to outdoor temperatures.
